Yen Hui was Confucius’s most beloved disciple, and considerably younger than him. He died young and unexpectedly [for reasons unexplained], causing Confucius great sorrow. He spoke little and was somewhat aloof, but also had an unparalleled level of brilliance. He is noted for being of high character, loving hsueh [learning], putting teachings into practice, making constant progression, properly directing anger, and not repeating mistakes.
