English writer James Allen (1864-1912) is by far and away most known for his short book As a Man Thinketh.
Not much is known about James’s life. At a young age, he left school due to his family’s financial needs. He worked as an administrative assistant for several manufacturers, and in 1902, he became a writer. Not long afterwards, he moved to a quiet town and pursued his studies and writing career, and also lived a somewhat ascetic lifestyle that included much meditation, writing, gardening, religiousness, and philosophical conversations.
As A Man Thinketh was James’s second book. Interestingly enough, he himself did not regard it highly. It was only under the urging of his wife that he was convinced to publish it.
Aside from As a Man Thinketh, James also wrote 18 other books.
His philosophy stresses the importance of having right thoughts, and the individual’s power to shape and cultivate his own character and attain joy.
