Is Jesus God?

Most Christians today accept Jesus not only as God’s son, but also as God (the Father) himself in human form.

It seems to me, however, that some Gospel passages support this view, while most others contradict it and portray him as distinctly different from God the Father.

Jesus is God

In John 10:30, Jesus says, “I and my father are one.”

In John 10:38, he says, “But if I do it, even if you believe not me, believe the works: that you may know and believe that the Father is in me, and I in him.”

In John 14:9, he says, “He who has seen me has seen the Father—so how do you then say, ‘Show us the Father’?”

Jesus Isn't God

But in Mark 10:17-18, when someone runs up to Jesus and asks him, “Good Master, what shall I do so that I may inherit eternal life?” Jesus responds by saying, “Why do you call me good? There is none good but one, that is, God.”

In Matthew 26:39, Jesus prays, “O my Father, if it is possible, let this cup pass from me: nevertheless not as I will, but as you will.”

In Luke 22:41-44, it says, “And he [Jesus] was withdrawn from them about a stone’s cast, and kneeled down, and prayed, saying, ‘Father, if you are willing, remove this cup from me: nevertheless not my will, but yours, be done.’ And an angel appeared to him from heaven, strengthening him. And being in an agony, he prayed more earnestly, and his sweat was as it were great drops of blood falling down to the ground.”

In Luke 2:52, it says, “?Jesus increased in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God and man.”

In John 7:16, Jesus declares, “My doctrine is not mine, but his who sent me.”

In John 12:49, Jesus says, “For I have not spoken of myself; but the Father who sent me, he gave me a commandment, what I should say, and what I should speak.”

In John 14:28, Jesus says, “I go unto the Father: for my Father is greater than I.”

And in Matthew 3:16-17, it says, “And when Jesus was baptized, went up straightway out of the water: and, lo, the heavens were opened to him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove, and lighting on him. And lo a voice from heaven said, ‘This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.’”

If Jesus is God, why would he refer to himself as different *from his Father, why would imply that he is not good and that only God is good, why would he state that his will is different from his Father’s, why would he pray to God, how could he be strengthened by an angel, how could he increase in wisdom and stature and increase in favor with God, why would he say that he is speaking on behalf of his Father but not on behalf of himself, why would he say that his Father is greater than he is, and why would God refer to him as someone else and say he is pleased with him?
