Thou Shalt Not Divorce

Though the Tanakh/Old Testament allows for divorce, Jesus forbids it.

“Whoever divorces his wife—except for her being unfaithful—causes her to commit adultery; and whoever marries the divorced woman commits adultery.”[83]

So according to the Gospel, a man is forbidden to divorce his wife for any reason other than her having been unfaithful—and thus, it follows that a couple is forbidden to end their marriage simply if, for instance, they are a bad match, they grow apart from one another, they make each other miserable, or any one of the various reasons (other than infidelity) that a man and wife get divorced.

Can this rule be part of a perfect guide to human life?

Suppose someone is married to an all around abusive spouse, and is required by religious law to remain married to that person for life—can such a marriage be conducive to that person’s ideal way of life, or, for that matter, to his or her spouse’s?
