Analects 13:26

Confucius said

The chun tzu is a tai er dignified/confident/self-possessed without vain arrogance.

The hsiao jen is vainly arrogant but not dignified.

The superior man has a dignified ease without pride.

The mean man has pride without a dignified ease. L

The nobler sort of man is dignified but not proud; the inferior man is proud but not dignified. G 65

Commentary

Vain arrogance is distinctly different from pure self-possessed dignity. Though both can exist within a person, they are not the same.
